Welcome to the Next Chapter

When Cults Library closed, one chapter came to an end. Now, our community has an opportunity to write the next.

Our ambition is not simply to reopen the doors of the former library, but to build on everything people valued about it and create something even better for the future: a modern, welcoming and sustainable community library, built around our three priorities of Community, Education and Wellbeing.

Books, reading and learning will always remain at its heart. But around them, we want to create new opportunities for people of all ages to meet, learn, volunteer, take part and feel connected to their community.

There is still a great deal of work ahead, but we have an exciting opportunity. With a clear plan, strong community support and people willing to help us make it happen, we can create something that serves Cults and the wider community for generations to come.

One Building. Many Opportunities.

Together, we can write The Next Chapter.

Our Vision

At Cults Library Trust, our vision is to create a modern, welcoming and sustainable library and community hub at the heart of Cults and Lower Deeside - a place where people can read, learn, meet and feel that they belong. Books, literacy and lifelong learning will remain central, alongside flexible spaces for local groups, charities and organisations to hold meetings, activities, workshops and events. Our wider vision also includes a community garden with seating, planting and opportunities for outdoor learning and relaxation, together with a small outdoor coffee facility where people can meet, enjoy a drink or spend time with a book. Built around our three pillars of Community, Education and Wellbeing, we want Cults Library to be a flexible and welcoming place that supports local organisations, creates opportunities and strengthens connections across the community. The full vision will take time and will depend on funding and what can be delivered sustainably, but our ambition is to create a thriving community asset for generations to come.

Library & Community Hub

At the heart of the project will be a modern library and flexible community hub. Books, reading and learning will remain central, alongside welcoming spaces that can be used by local groups, charities, clubs and organisations for meetings, workshops, activities and events. We want the building to be somewhere people can browse, study, meet others, take part in community life or simply enjoy spending time in a comfortable and inclusive space.

Gardening Tools & Plants

Community Garden

The outdoor grounds will become an important part of the wider vision, with a community garden designed around nature, growing and wellbeing. We hope to create space for planting, community growing, biodiversity and environmental learning, alongside seating where people can relax and enjoy the outdoors. The garden will provide opportunities for volunteers, families, schools and community groups to get involved and help create a greener, more welcoming space for everyone.

Coffee Shack

Coffee Cup and Beans

Our longer term plans also include a small outdoor coffee shack, helping to create a more welcoming and active space around the library. Visitors will be able to sit outside with a coffee or take it into the library while they read, meet friends or attend an activity. The aim is to create a simple, relaxed offer that complements the library and community hub while encouraging people to stay, connect and enjoy the space.

Securing the site

Cults Library Trust is working to secure ownership of the former library building through the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015, which gives community organisations the right to request the transfer of publicly owned assets for community benefit. We first expressed our interest in 2024 and submitted our formal Community Asset Transfer request in February 2025. Since then, we have been working through the application process, with the aim of securing ownership by the end of 2026, subject to final approval by Aberdeen City Council’s Finance and Resources Committee.

Delivering the Project

Our vision will be delivered through a phased approach, allowing the project to develop as funding and resources become available. The initial phase will focus on establishing the library and community hub, followed by the development of a community garden and outdoor learning space, and the introduction of a community café. The timing and order of these phases will remain flexible, depending on funding, community needs and opportunities for partnership.

Long-Term Operations

Cults Library Trust is committed to creating a financially sustainable community hub that can serve local people for generations to come. Our long-term operations will be guided by a robust business plan, combining income from activities, room hire, fundraising, grants and community support. By carefully managing our resources and developing reliable income streams, we aim to establish a self-sustaining organisation that can maintain the building, expand its services and continue delivering lasting community benefits.
